Lee Shanahan was content to bide his time aboard the son of Shirocco for much of the journey, as he steadily crept into contention, travelling smoothly to be part of a breakaway group of four along the back straight. Forced to delay his challenge when his path was blocked at the tight home bend, it did hand the pace-setting eventual runner-up the chance to steal the race from the font. However, it was impressive just how swiftly he ate into the leader's advantage on the climb to the final fence, to the extent that he landed over that obstacle with the lead and swiftly went about extending clear to win by four lengths. He certainly looked to win with plenty in hand at the line, to make the perfect start to his career.
