Only The Bold made a big impression when taking the five-year-old geldings’ maiden at Tyrella in January. This maiden was run at a strong tempo, particularly from the halfway point and it clocked the quickest time of the afternoon, some 13 seconds faster than the day’s average. This well-bred son of Jeremy was unlucky on his debut performance at Borris when he parted ways with his rider with just over a mile to race. Jordan Gainford began to increase the tempo of the race exiting the back straight, swiftly putting his rivals under pressure, he then forged clear to come home nine lengths clear of his rivals. It was particularly notable just how forcefully he was able to pull clear in the home straight, given the good ground conditions, suggesting that he is a horse with plenty of toe, and one that has to be considered an above-average victor. The Warren Ewing-trained winner displayed a nice blend of both speed and stamina which highlights him as an exciting sort, who will be a real addition to any trainer’s yard over the coming seasons.
