Western Fiona stepped up from her fourth-placed debut effort at Ballindenisk last month by capturing the five-year-old and upwards mares’ maiden at Ballyvadock. The daughter of Westerner made most of the running and overcame being hampered before four-out, where she then surged on to produce two faster jumps over the final two fences. The five-year-old asserted on the flat, where she gamely responded to her partner’s urgings to pick up the running and held on valiantly to beat the staying on Aizy Does It by one-and-three-quarter lengths. This bay mare looks like she will be a real addition to any trainer’s yard in mares’ races over the coming seasons.
