As a son of the Grade 2 winning and Grade 1-placed race mare Shadow Eile, Matty’s Getaway has a lovely pedigree, and he backed that up with a taking winning display at Ballycrystal last Sunday. Following two non-completions in the spring, he certainly appeared to have improved for the summer break and a change in tactics for his re-appearance. Racing from the front, he had the field nicely stretched out from an early point, and although strongly pressed by two horses that between them had cost €128,000 between them, he showed a great attitude, picking-up once again in the home straight to win going away by five lengths. The runner-up had finished a close second on his last start behind a horse that has gone on to win three bumpers. Handler Donnchadh Doyle clearly has thought plenty of him having gone out and bought his year-younger brother for €78,000 at the store sales last year.
