Record Breaking Results at the Tattersalls Ireland Ascot July Sale
There was robust trade at the Tattersalls Ireland Ascot July Sale today with a total of 24 lots breaking the £20,000 barrier, 18 more than 2015 with the top lot selling for £75,000. A total of 137 lots were sold for record £1,303,200, a rise of 56%, at an average of £9,512, up 48% on 2015 and a median of £4,500, an increase of 33% on the corresponding year. The clearance rate was 78%.
Top honours on the day went to Lot
111, Rock On Rio from Denis Murphy’s Ballyboy Stables. The gelding by Captain Rio impressed on his debut by winning a four-year-old Maiden at Tralee in May. He was knocked down for £75,000 to young and upcoming trainer Andrew McNamara who is already making a name for himself in the training ranks.
Wildcard entry Fortified Bay (Lot
128A) proved a popular addition to the sale. By Makfi, the four-year-old gelding won a Bumper at Perth only his only start. Offered by Sam Curling’s Skehanagh Stables, he was sold to Kevin Ross Bloodstock who had to go to £70,000 to secure the winner.
Earlier in the day, Alan Swinbank’s Western House Stables offered the lightly raced Austerity. The son of Elnadim was bought by JJ O’Leary who paid £47,000 for the close relation of black-type performer Celtic Silence and Celtic Sapphire.

Major Increases at the Tattersalls Ireland Ascot August Sale
The Tattersalls Ireland Ascot August Sale finished with increases synonymous with this venue in recent months. The sale saw a total of 85 lots selling for an aggregate of £448,000, a rise of 30% and an average of £5,281, an increase of 13%. The clearance rate was 72%.
Headlining the sale was recent Bumper winner Dan McGrue (Lot
121). By Dansant, this four-year-old gelding was a winner of his only start and was snapped up by Richard Barber for £60,000 when offered by his trainer John Nicholson’s Seven Sisters Stables.
The Godolphin draft unsurprisingly proved popular; seven lots were sold of a total of £128,000 at an average of £18,286 and a median of £17,000. Top lot from the draft was Lot
54; Azhar. The well-bred filly by Exceed And Excel is out of an own-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Domedriver and was signed for by purchaser Matt Sigsworth of Ebor Bloodstock for £42,000.
Trainer Nigel Hawke also purchased from the Godolphin draft. He had to go to £28,000 for Deauville Crystal, a winner in Germany at two-years and a half-sister to Group 3 winner Three Rocks. The now three-year-old filly is by Raven’s Pass (Lot
49).
