Lot 25: apologies in the delay in this posting, but a few gremlins in the works this morning. This gelding by Lavirco, already named Vigoville, was the first to threaten making a six-figure sum at the 2012 Derby Sale.
Agent Mags O'Toole tried hard to buy the athletic mover, but, after a head-to-head battle, had to give way to Harold Kirk at €95,000. (12:20)
Thursday, June 28th
Lot 425: it might be unlucky for some, but John O'Byrne will hope that the 13th horse he has bought at the Derby Sale 2012 will prove to be lucky.
The Flemensfirth gelding was a €58,000 purchase, O'Byrne seeing off Tom Rudd taking instructions over the telephone. The gelding is a first foal out of the Oscar mare Corbetstown Queen, a half-sister to the eight-time winner and multiple Grade 1-placed Fota Island. He was sold by Mr Michael Daly. (17:12)
Day one... of the 2012 Tattersalls Derby Sale is due to start at 10am. Follow all the action live here.
The day's lots and results can be seen on the screen to the left, while the day's withdrawals, catalogue updates and live statistics can be found by clicking on the buttons to the top left. (09:20)
Lot 48: is bought by NH jockey Barry Geraghty for €25,000. By Heron Island, he is out of a half-sister to Dawn Leader.
The jockey is already a successful pin-hooker: he bought Bob's Worth as a yearling for €16,500, sold him privately to trainer Nicky Henderson and rode him to win the Grade 1 RSA Chase this spring. (12:29)
Lot 54: Mags O'Toole gets lucky this time around and becomes the first to spend €100,000 at this year's Derby sale.
From Bridgetown House Stud, this son of Presenting is out of Land Of Honour, a half-sister to the Gold Cup winner See More Business. O'Toole saw off first agent Tom Malone and then David Redvers. (12:34)
Lot 202: a filly by Golan makes €27,000 and is bought by Kevin Ross. Trainer Philip Hobbs, standing on the bridge, waved his hand to bid a number of times, but in the end had to gave way to the Irish agent.
The filly will have plenty of paddock value once her racing days are over. She is out of Rose Of Inchiquin (Roselier), a Grade 2 winner over hurdles, who is also a half-sister to the Grade 2 hurdle and chase winner Be My Belle.
She is also a half-sister to the unraced Carnbelle, dam of Hold The Pin, the winner of over €100,000 in prize-money and six races, including a Grade 3 novice chase in 2011. (18:49)
Lot 64: sons of King's Theatre held court at the 2011 Derby Sale and this Five Naughts Stud-offered son by the late Ballylinch Stud-based sire becomes the first of his this year to top €50,000.
After a protracted duel, Eddie Mullins comes out on top at €80,000 for the son of the good racemare Liss A Paoraigh, a three-time Grade 1 winner. (13:01)
Lot 77: described by auctioneer Simon Kerrins as a "real corker", this son of Robin des Champs is another bought this morning by Mags O'Toole.
Although the one-time French-based stallion now stands at Glenview Stud, this three-year-old gelding is a French bred and is named Sabroclair. He is a first foal out of the nine-time winning Volochine mare, Malicka Madrick, a half-sister to the Grade 3 winner Galant Nuit.
O'Toole was in the bidding from the early prices, but Aiden Murphy did not enter the fray until €68,000, and then pushed his opponent to €90,000 before he shook his head when offered a bid at €92,000. (13:40)
Lot 81: David Redvers, more usually buying Flat horses, steps up to the mark for this Definite Article gelding from Ahaunduff Farm.
He is a half-brother to Felix Younger, runner-up in the Grade 1 Neptune Investments Bingham Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham (13:47)
Lot 95: the only lot in this year's Derby Sale catalogue by Network, the sire of one of the best chasers currently in training, the Nicky Henderson-trained Sprinter Sacre, makes €130,000 and is bought by Henry de Bromhead.
"I am delighted to have got him," says de Bromhead, "and he is for Mr Potts. He is a gorgeous horse, and we valued to him around that mark. Network has carried all before him this year and seems to be able to improve his mares."
The bidding ripped up from a €10,000 opening spot, and although Nicky Henderson was watching the bidding with obvious interest, he declined to get involved when given the opportunity by the auctioneer. The three-year-old gelding is called Venitien De Mai, is a May 31st foal and is out of the dual winner Meylba (Grand Tresor), who has yet to have a runner. He was sold by Moanmore Stables.
Network stands at Haras National de Cercy La Tour and in 2012 at a fee of €2,100. Sprinter Sacre is his leading performer, is a nine-time winner from 12 starts and won this year's renewals of the Arkle and Maghull Novices Chase at Cheltenham and Aintree.
The previous lot (Lot 94) also had a rarity value to him being the only horse offered here by the Montjeu stallion, Hurricane Run. Trainer Jonjo O'Neill made most of the opportunity, buying at €50,000. (14:36)
Lot 120: Harold Kirk, buying in association with trainer Willie Mullins, springs into action again and picks up this good-looking son of Beat Hollow for €43,000.
Donald McCain, who trains one of the stallion's best performers so far over hurdles, Cinders And Ashes, winner of the Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham, was involved for much of the bidding, but cried enough ahead of the €40,000 mark.
Beat Hollow, a former Juddmonte Farms stallion, moved to Ballylinch Stud this year to stand as a dual-purpose sire. His fee was €6,000.
Lot 120 gave vendors Manister House a profitable pin-hooking return: the gelding had been bought as a yearling for €11,000. (15:29)
Lot 165: Noel Meade buys the Milan gelding from Ballincurrig House Stud for €38,000.
Out of the Fourstars Allstars mare Pebble Hill, he is a brother to a NH Flat and hurdles winners, as well as a half-brother to two further bumper and hurdling winners.
Pebble Hill is a half-sister to the good chasers Cane Brake and Bob Hall, and to the Grade 3-winning hurdler Judge Roy Bean. (17:14)
Lot 169: bit of a run on Milan geldings... Tom Lacey goes to €40,000 for a half-brother to the Grade 2-placed six-year-old novice hurdler Burn And Turn (Flemensfirth) sold by Bluebell Farm.
Jessica Harrington was a reluctant underbidder. She had more reason than many to be interested in Lot 169: not only does she have the half-brother at her Commonstown Stables, but under the third dam is the 15-time winner Space Trucker. He was trained throughout his career by Harrington. (17:34)
Lot 181: a son of Gold Well, from Ballybrennan Stud, makes €20,000.
The stallion stands at Arctic Tack Stud and from few jumping runners is getting some promising sorts. This three-year-old matches the best price yet for a store by the sire, a brother to Montjeu. (17:57)
Lot 185: a Presenting half-brother to the Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 placed novice hurdler Hell's Bay makes €48,000. He is bought by Tom Lacey and Charlie Brooks. He was sold by Goldford Stud.
His dam Queen's Flagship is a half-sister to Viking Flagship and Flagship Uberalles. (18:01)
Lot 186: "I just love him, I think he is a gorgeous individual," said Bobby O'Ryan after buying this son of Kalanisi. "I like the sire too, he gets some good sorts."
O'Ryan had to see off a number of fresh bidders until, standing behind the partition and nodding at €94,000, he proved too much for the opposition.
This three-year-old is a half-brother to three winners from four runners from the mare, including Dylan Ross, who finished second in December's Future Champions Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown behind Cash And Go.
"The horse has been bought for an Irish client and he'll go off to be broken in now. I am not sure where he'll be trained, but he'll be given plenty of time." (18:20)
Lot 228: becomes the joint top-price of the day so far when selling for €130,000. Bloodstock agent Aiden Murphy, who was on the telephone thoroughout bidding, was the purchaser, seeing off Paul Shanahan. Tom Malone kicked off proceedings.
Murphy bought on behalf of owner Graham Roach, and the horse will eventually go into training with Paul Nicholls.
"Graham wanted one of today's choice lots, and I am really pleased with the horse. We missed on a couple earlier today, and I am quite glad that we did - but this is a really nice individual," said Murphy.
The three-year-old is from the first-crop of Scorpion, and is easily the best-priced progeny to sell by the Coolmore sire so far.
From Lakefield Farm, he is out of the Surumu mare Sherin, who was placed twice in Germany. She has bred four runners from ten foals, including I Shot The Sheriff (Westerner), winner of a NH Flat race in 2011, and Shawnee. She was unraced, but is the dam of two winners, including Shawnee Saga, a Group 2 third.
This is predominately a Flat pedigree - and a top class one at that. The second dam Suivee was a Listed winner and is dam of the Group 2 winner Simoun, and is the second dam of Stacelita, the former champion French three-year-old filly, and the winner of six Group and Grade 1s, including the Prix Diane and the Flower Bowl Invitational (G1). (19:59)
End of day one statistics: of the 251 lots catalogued for sale today, 226 lots were offered of which 170 sold.
The day's average was €28,594, the median €22,000 and the aggregate was €4,861,000. The clearance rare was 75 per cent.
It was a two-way tie for top price honours between Lot 95, the Network gelding sold by Moanmore Stables, and the Scorpion from Lakefield Farm. Both made €130,000 with the former bought by Alan Potts and Aiden Murphy buying Lot 228.
Three horses made over €100,000, and 22 €50,000 or more.
Top consignor today was Ballincurrig House Stud, which sold nine lots for €316,000, at an average price of €35,111, while Harold Kirk/WP Mullins bought six horses for €295,000. (21:08)
Friday, June 29th
Lot 254: who says you don't want to be the first in the ring? It certainly did not do Lot 254, a gelding by Kalanisi out of Storm Front, any harm at all: he fetched €50,000 and was bought by John O'Byrne.
He has a fine pedigree being a half-brother to Back In Front, an 11-time winner and three-time Grade 1 victor, and was sold by Tobernea Farm, the property of Mrs Noreen Hayes. (10:14)
Lot 271: Ron O'Leary buys a Milan gelding from Mill House Stud for €51,000.
A half-brother to the graded juvenile hurdler Mosstown (Dilshaan), he hails from the "T" family of the Aga Khan's - under the fourth dam is the Prix du Jockey-Club winner Top Ville. (11:03)
Lot 299 and Lot 300: the four-year-old sister (Lot 299) and her three-year-old brother, both by Presenting, fetch €54,000 and €150,000, the former becoming the top-priced filly so far at the sale, while the latter is the new top lot overall.
The pair, both sold by Castletown Quarry Stud, are out of the mare Victorine, a half-sister to the Champion Hurdle-winning brothers Morley Street and Granville Again.
Victorine has had one runner to date: Tasitiocht. She has run twice, and won her last start, a bumper at Kilbeggan for trainer Willie Mullins after finishing second first time out on heavy ground at Punchestown. With that success in mind, it is not surprising that Harold Kirk in association with Jackie Mullins bought the filly.
There was plenty of interest in the gelding, and Russell McNab kicked off proceedings. Gerry Griffin was involved through to the end of bidding, but in the end the three-year-old went the way of MV Magnier. (12:23)
Lot 305: fetches six figures and is bought by Mags O'Toole. The agent had to pay €105,000 for the Kayf Tara out of the unraced Presenting half-sister to the talented Watson Lake. He was sold by Goldford Stud.
O'Toole quickly spends another €57,000 on a gelding by Presenting. He was also from Goldford, and is out of a half-sister to Celestial Gold and Fiveforthree. (12:32)
Lot 328: "He is a really nice horse, and very racy," said buyer David Dennis, who had to go to €70,000 in order to buy this son of Sholokhov on behalf of Favourites Racing.
"We'll take him back and get him broken in, a trainer has not yet been decided," added Dennis.
A half-brother to a six-time winner All The Winds, who has also been Listed placed on the Flat, the gelding was sold by leading vendor Ballincurrig House Stud. The Triumph Hurdle winner Spectroscope is under the third dam.
Sholokhov, a son of Sadler's Wells and a winner of the Gran Criterium and a runner-up in the Irish Derby, can boast of a dual Group 1 Flat winner: Night Magic who won the Grosser Mercedes-Benz Preis von Baden and the Preis der Diana.
His leading NH performers are the three-time Irish-trained NH Flat winner Don Cossack, and the French Grade 1 winner, Esmondo.
Favourites Racing add to the haul a little later with Lot 343, a son of Kayf Tara and from the family of Celtic Shot. (13:18)
Lot 362 and Lot 363: are bought by NH jockeys past and present.
Trainer Charlie Swan goes to €42,000 for Lot 362, a son of Presenting from Springfield House Stud. The three-year-old is a half-brother to the black-type hurdler Banasan (Marju), while under the second dam, the Park Hill Stakes (G2) winner Borushka, is Tolworth Hurdle (G2) winner Behrajan.
It is also a high-class Flat family and includes Behera, a champion three-year-old filly, as well as Behkabad, a Grand Prix de Paris and Breeders' Cup winner.
Lot 363 was bought by current jockey and pinhooker Katie Walsh from Rathurtin Stud. The Flemensfirth gelding cost Walsh €30,000 and he is out of a half-sister to the former Champion Hurdler Flakey Dove. (14:46)
Lot 383: sells for €60,000 and becomes the highest-priced to sell at this sale by Beneficial. He is bought by Conor O'Dwyer.
The sire has ten lots sell from 13 offered so far, with Lot 99 and Lot 111 making €55,000 and €52,000 apiece. They were bought by Highflyer Bloodstock and Jonjo O'Neill. (15:30)
Lot 416: out of the large black-type mare Come In Moscow, this Presenting gelding is bought by Pat Flynn for €42,000.
The mare, by Over The River, was a Listed winner and graded placed over fences.
This Springfield House Stud-offered three-year-old is her first foal. (16:39)
Lot 422: Tom Mullins sees off strong opposition for this good-looking sort by Oscar. He pays €45,000 for the Glenwood Stud-offered three-year-old. (16:55)
Lot 426: if anyone was suffering from that Friday afternoon feeling, then the sale of Lot 426 fetching €100,000 will have stirred the brain cells again.
Described by the auctioneer as "one of the nicest horses I have seen over the two days", the entrance to the parade ring was packed as the Galberstown Stud-offered son of Kayf Tara was brought into the ring.
Trainer Jim Culloty, sat on the stairs, tried very hard to buy, but he had to give way to Steve Fleetham. It was a second purchase at this year's Derby Sale for the buyer who spent €65,000 on an Oscar gelding yesterday (Lot 104).
This lot, who is out of the black-type mare Corrieann (Anshan), is the second today by Kayf Tara to fetch six-figures: Mags O'Toole spending €105,000 on the gelding ex Watson River (Lot 305).
The gelding had been bought as foal at the 2009 November Sale by Oak Tree Farm for €34,000.
With a further four lots still to be offered, Kayf Tara's current average is running at €35,500 for 17 lots sold. (17:30)
Lot 447: the decision by Knightsbrook to buy back their Presenting ex Dusty Too gelding as a yearling at the November Sale 2010 proved to be a wise move.
The consignor re-offered the horse as a three-year-old today and sold him for €50,000.
There has, of course, been a significant pedigree update since: his half-brother is none other than Simonsig (Fair Mix), one of the most exciting NH horses in training.
In the spring, the Nicky Henderson-trained runner won the Neptune Investment Bingham Novices Hurdle (G1) by 7l and then the John Smith's Mersey Novices Hurdle (G2) by 15l. (18:14)
Lot 458: if something works once, well there is a chance it might do again - probably the reasoning behind Lot 458's purchase for €110,000 by Aiden Kennedy on behalf of Bob and Jean Bishop.
Not only are they the owners of the talented Cue Card, like this horse a son of King's Theatre, but they also own this horse's brother Theatre Guide, a bumper winner, a hurdle winner from six starts.
"He goes into training with Colin Tizzard," reported Kennedy.
Jim Culloty was once again the underbidder. (18:47)
Lot 462: sells for €250,000 and becomes the new sale topper.
The gelding is by first-crop sire Scorpion, was sold by Abbey Stables and was bought by owner Alan Potts, trainer Henry de Bromhead bidding on behalf of the owner.
"We are delighted to have got the horse," said de Bromhead. "It's very exciting."
The auditorium was packed to see the good-looking horse sell, and a number of bidders were involved, including Kevin Ross and David Minton, but it was MV Magnier who had to settle for second spot on this occasion.
It was not the first time the horse has been through the Tattersalls Ireland sale ring: offered as a foal he was bought by Kennycourt Stud for €20,000, and then as a yearling when he was bought for €27,000. It is a great pinhooking return for the vendors, who turned the horse out in fantastic condition.
The young mare Fair Present has produced one winner from one runner, Caheronaun, who also finished third in a Grade 2 hurdle at Fairyhouse.
Lot 462 is the second by Scorpion to fetch six-figures: Aiden Murphy spending €130,000 on Lot 228 on day one's sale topper. The stallion's average is now €45,000 for 16 lots sold. (19:11)
End of Derby Sale Statistics: the two-day Derby Sale produced an average price of €28,014, an aggregate of €9,412,750 and a median price of €22,000. From 425 horses offered, 336 lots sold giving a strong 79 per cent clearance rate.
Eight lots made over €100,000, while 41 horses fetched €50,000 and more. The sale's top lot was the Scorpion sold by Abbey Stables to Alan Potts for €250,000, the next best was €150,000 given by MV Magnier for a son of Presenting from Castletown Quarry Stables. The top two from day one - the Network and another by Scorpion – jointly held the third-best price at €130,000.
The leading consignor was Ballincurrig Stud, which sold 17 horses for €718,000, followed by Goldford Stud's 13, which sold for €519,000. The six sold by Abbey Stables achieved an aggregate of €417,500.
John O'Byrne was the sale's busiest buyer, picking up 13 lots for an outlay of €523,000. Alan Potts only bought two - but as he bought the sale toppers from both day one and day two, the pair cost him €380,000. Harold Kirk / WP Mullins bought seven horses for €335,000. (20:48)
