"Being a bit small does not concern me – I would be just as happy to win the Champion Hurdle as the Gold Cup! I don't have an owner as yet – he is for sale." (20:41)
Lot 220A: the son of Shirocco is bought by trainer Stuart Crawford as a trading prospect – sold by Galbertstown Stables the gelding, who is the second foal out of the winning mare Kayf Hampshire (Kayf Tara), fetched €50,000.
"I thought he was the best of the day, though the page is slightly light for what he cost," reported Crawford. "I have been waiting on him all day and I had to go a bit further than I wanted to, but it is hard to buy a bit of quality without spending a bit of money. If he gets a result he will be cheap, if he doesn't he will be expensive!"
He added: "This horse is very correct and Evan Williams trains his full-brother – I spoke to Evan a few minutes ago and he loves his horse. He highly recommended the full-brother, which gave me the encouragement to push on. The right boys were bidding against me, if the right people like him at this end, hopefully the right people will like him at the next stage."
Of plans he outlined: "Hopefully, I will have a big decision to make – hopefully he will show me enough that I will have to make a decision between pointing or going down the bumper route. He will be trained to sell."
And of his store horse buying season, he said: "I have been fairly quiet, I thought trade was too strong at the other sales, you have to have a cut off point. That allowed me to be a wee bit stronger today, it is all swings and roundabouts and I have done a bit of business today.
"And I might do a bit tomorrow – I know tomorrow is set up as a Part 2, but I have seen a number of horses I like." (19:37)

The "good one" at King's was the hardy runner Oh Crick (Nikos), a four-time winner over fences, including in the Grand Annual Chase (G3) at Cheltenham and the Red Rum Handicap Chase (G3) at Aintree. He was also placed 17 times, with a third place in a Grade 1 chase at Ascot a highlight.

Derby Sale 2023
Day 2
Lot 397: the best has been saved to very nearly last – this gelding, one of only two lots catalogued by the late Kayf Tara, makes €265,000 and becomes the highest-priced store horse of the year.
The bids came in from all over the ring and online, but it was Eddie O'Leary standing with trainer Gordon Elliott who was successful.
Elliott had particular reason to want to purchase this horse – he has the year older full-brother Romero Coolio at home in training. A winning point-to-pointer he was purchased at the Tattersalls Cheltenham Festival Sale this spring for £420,000 by Elliott and Aidan O'Ryan from Monbeg Stables and Donnacha Doyle.
Elliott said: "He was the stand out for the sale. He looks the part, and he looks a little like his brother."
This gelding was sold by Castledillon Stud and Timmy Hillman said: "We bought him privately off Will Kinsey and it was through Covid so it is all due to him. He was a smasher at the time. He has done nothing wrong at all and let's hope he is lucky for his new owners."
It is a first Derby Sale top lot for Castledillon Stud.
With the subsequent lot by No Risk At All making €130,000 and Lot 400, an Authorized gelding from Sluggara Farm fetching €110,000, 32 horses have sold for €100,000 or more, the third-best result at a Derby Sale. (18:34)

La Vie De Boitron is a Lavirco half-sister to the two-time Prix Royal-Oak (G1) winner Tac de Boistron.
Dempsey, who was buying his fourth horse this week, said: "Hopefully, there is a lucky one amongst them! They are all nice horses and for an owner in the yard. This is lovely, big scopey horse. He looked the business and is by a good sire."
The trainer also purchased Lot 144, a filly by Elusive Pimpernel for €40,000, a filly by No Risk At All named Irish Music for €80,000 (Lot 330), and Lot 355. Named Kaikoura he is by the young French stallion Beaumec de Houelle and cost €80,000.

Offered by Greenlands Farm Stud, the three-year-old is out of the six-time-winning Milan mare Ixora, the dam of three winners from three runners.

Lot 320: "We have waited for him all day," said purchaser and former jockey Bryan Cooper, who was standing with his dad, trainer Tom Cooper. "He is for a new owner of Dad's who has given us an order.
"He is going home to be trained and, hopefully, he is a racehorse. I love the Doctor Dinos and I was in Willie's [Mullins] and rode the likes of State Man – his stock just have a great attitude."
The father and son team had to go €170,000 to secure the April-born bay gelding, who is named Sionainn and was pinhooked in France by Hamish Macauley for €46,000. He was sold today by Ballyreddin and Bushertown.

The gelding by the former champion NH sire Flemensfirth is closely related to the eight-time winner O O Seven, a dual Grade 1 runner-up and a Flemensfirth half-brother to dam Golden Songbird (Gold Well).
The Grade 1 winner Cardinal Hill shows up under the third dam.
The second foal out of Golden Songbird, the gelding was sold by Michael Fitzpatrick's Kilminfoyle House Stud, and is one of two lots from the consignor cataloged at the Derby Sale. (14:59)

"He has been bought for John Hales," said Malone after spending €160,000 on the gelding by Authorized. "Paul saw the gelding when he was here, this is his type of horse and is a lovely big staying chaser in the making with a lovely page. Paul was very sweet on him.
"I showed him everything yesterday and this was on the short list, I think we have bought him well and we are very happy to have got him. We have not had too many by Authorized, but he speaks for himself – he is good stallion and he can get you a very very good horse. There is plenty to like about the horse and what is on the page."
Already named Authorizedetou is the second foal out of the winning Buck's Boum mare Diteou and he was sold today by Ballincurrig House Stud. (13:10)
Lot 249: Johnny Collins's good morning continues, the consignor sells this son of Doctor Dino for €240,000 – Collins enjoyed a quick profitable turnover as he bought the gelding only in January when he paid just £58,000.
"There was no imagination when I bought him, it was only a matter of keeping him for a few months, he was a lovely three-year-old then," reported Collins. "I bought him to come here, I was wanting something by this stallion – I had been trying to buy one by him in France and I could not get them. It is a lovely result."
He added: "This gelding is by an amazing sire and is an incredible mover. He is the same horse in January as he is now – he came from a good farm and was well prepped, I was just in the right place at the right time."
Today's purchaser was Ian Ferguson buying for owner Walter Dennison.
"He will go and be broken and after that a decision will be made as to whether he goes to a trainer or down the point route, I would think, possibly, he will to a trainer," said Ferguson. "He is a scopey sort and is by a sire who can do no wrong at present. I loved him as an individual and thought he was the nicest horse in the sale. I have seen him since Monday, and I did not think I would have to give that sort of money."
Underbidders included Bobby O'Ryan and Tom Malone.
The gelding, bred and sold earlier this year by Mill Farm Stud, is out Countless Comet (Medicean), the dam of one winner from two runners. She is a half-sister to the Group 2 winner Air Pilot (Zamindar). (12:49)
Lot 231: the Glenview Stud-based Shirocco enjoyed a best-ever finish on the NH sires' table last season – fifth with 79 winners and £1,933,502 in earnings – and his gelding out of the Grade 2-winning chase Milan mare Carrig Millie makes €75,000.
The three-year-old was sold by Ballyfree House, the property of breeder Maurice Sheely. Carrig Millie, bred by Jane Mangan, is a half-sister to the Paul Nicholls-trained Strong Flow, winner of the Feltham Novices Chase (G1) and the Hennessy Gold Cup (G3).
The gelding was bought by Matty Flynn O'Connor's Ballycrystal Racing, which has enjoyed such good sales over the past couple of years at the Tattersalls Cheltenham sales with its point-to-point graduates. (12:01)
Lot 226: named Kisuton Enki, the half-sister to the multiple Grade winner and placed Yala Enki (Nickname) makes €160,000 after a protracted duel between Bobby O'Ryan and the Mariga family of Coolmara Stables, who were hoping to reinvest in a future broodmare some of the funds made yesterday when they sold the Day 1 sale topper for €250,000.
The two battled away, with O'Ryan pacing on the balcony by his sales office, but in the end after some good-hearted batting between the two rival parties, the agent came out on top.
"She is lovely," said the successful buyer. "She is for a client who is looking for a race filly and then broodmare. No training plans have been made as yet. I have been very lucky with Johnny Collins of Brown Island and have bought two Royal Ascot winners from him.
"I was hoping to get her for a bit less, as I always want a bit of value. I saw her the other day, and she was the one I liked the best. I spoke to my client yesterday and he said to see what we could do."
A pleased Collins (not quite all smiles as he has another five lots due in the ring today) said: "I bought her privately in France as a foal. It is difficult to find fillies with pages like this, and she is a lovely filly, too. She was always going to be a valuable filly as she has residual."
The stallion Beaumec de Houelle, a son of Martaline, stands at Haras de Montaigu. He was a hurdler in France and won the Grade 1 Grande Course de Haies des 3 Ans. His first crop are three-year-olds of this year and he has already had a winner in France. (11:39)
Lot 215: a first purchase this morning by Tom Malone, the agent goes to €95,000 for the Walk In The Park filly sold by Glenwood Stud. She was an €18,500 foal pinhook by Richard Frisby and is from the family of the Grade 2 winner Madison Du Berlais.
She is now a half-sister to two winners, the six-year-old Kelly's Birr (Yeats), a winner over hurdles since the catalogue was published. (10:51)
